311, New Politics, and Passafire are bringing their signature sounds to the Charlotte Metro Credit Union Amphitheatre!
311 (pronounced three-eleven) was formed in Omaha in 1988 by Nick Hexum (vocals, guitar), lead guitarist Jim Watson (later replaced by Tim Mahoney), Aaron “P-Nut” Wills (bass) and Chad Sexton (drums). Doug "SA" Martinez (vocals, turntables) joined later to complete the current line-up. The band's name is taken from the police code for indecent exposure in Omaha, after the original guitarist was arrested for streaking. 311's music is a blend of rock, reggae, hip hop and funk and their first release was an independent EP (Downstairs) that was recorded in 1989 in Nick’s basement. They followed it up with 2 more independent releases that led to a record deal in 1992. They released their debut studio album (Music) a year later but it wasn’t until their 1995 eponymous album that they achieved mainstream recognition. The album’s first single (Don't Stay Home) hit #29 on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks chart and the follow-up single (Down) received heavy airplay on mainstream radio and ended up topping the same chart. The album was certified triple Platinum led the band to a stellar career with 10 more studio albums, 1 live album, 5 compilation albums, 7 video albums and 33 singles.
