The Decemberists, Oregon’s sensational indie folk rock artists are bringing their signature sounds to the Charlotte Metro Credit Union Amphitheatre!
The band was formed in Portland in 2000 and has been through numerous line-up changes since then. Currently the band consists of Colin Meloy (lead vocals, guitar, songwriter), Chris Funk (guitar, multi-instrumentalist), Jenny Conlee (keyboards, piano, Hammond organ, accordion), Nate Query (bass), and John Moen (drums). The band's name refers to the 1825 insurrection in Imperial Russia (called the Decembrist revolt) and Colin has also stated that the name is meant to invoke the “drama and melancholy” that comes with the month of December. They have numerous influences and their website claims they “adore” the groups Norfolk and Western, Explosions In The Sky, The Postal Service, The Long Winters, Death Cab for Cutie, Dokken, Tycho, El Ten Eleven, The Shins, The Octopus Project, Electrelane, Camera Obscura, Clearlake, The Thermals, Modest Mouse, Swords and Earlimart. Their songs range from upbeat pop to instrumentally lush ballads and are peppered with instruments like the accordion, Hammond organ, Wurlitzer organ, and upright bass. Lyrically the band favors a storytelling approach, instead of the introspection common to modern rock. They’ve had a stellar career with 7 studio albums, 9 EPs, 1 live album, 2 compilation albums, and 16 singles.
